Hamble Point Marina Boatshow 20th – 22nd April 2012.

Over the 3 day event we will be giving guided tours of our new workshop facility, giving demonstrations on rigging, splicing and advice on rig tuning.

Our experianced riggers will be on hand to give advice on any rigging issues or questions you might have.

We will also be running a competition or two to win a rig tune and rig inspection.

Their product recall reads:

It has been brought to our attention that a few forestay fittings of this design have failed due to a crack in the welding. The crack develops along the weld on the rear side of the fitting inside the mast. It is not visable from the outside. The suspect production batches were used during the period 2004 – 2008.

All the failed fittings origin from long distance cruising boats with inadequate rig tune and long periods of sailing using only the genoa.

Only masts exposed to forestay loads exceeding a critical limit are at risk and we have listed all these boats below:

This new bi-annual event really was ‘The Yachtsmans Regatta’ the race committee had planned for its first year. Conditions were fantastic, ranging from champagne sailing on the opening day, a windy Friday & and a tricky light wind final day.

Team Steamy had a great regatta, the crew which included Performance Rigging’s Gordon and Fiona quickly gained a reputation for being last on the dance floor, but also managed to be consistently first on the water with a full complement of 1st places.

The event was a resounding success both on and off the water,  we look forward to competing in, and providing regatta support for the 2013 event.  For details and to enter see: www.plymouthraceweek.org

The Azores and Back race which takes place every four years, is open to singlehanded and doublehanded yachts under 61 feet.  Fifty Nine entrants started from Falmouth on 4 June,  heading to Ponta Delgada on the island of San Miguel in the Azores.

Neil Martin skippered his J133 to a 3rd in Class and a very respectable 4th Overall in IRC after the first leg. Jammy Dodger crossed the finish line on the 11th June after almost exactly 7 days at sea, covering over 1200 miles of the North Atlantic.

Gordons Golden Rules:

• Always secure yourself  to the harness or bosuns chair with a bowline, never trust a snapshackle.
• Always use an internal halyard. Avoid using a 2:1 halyard, if you have to, only use the 1:1 part of the halyard
• Always make a thorough check of the equipment you are about to use – check the halyard for wear, check the winch, clutch and the lead of the halyard
• Decide how you are going to communicate & what hand signals you will use
• Climb the standing rigging not the mast
• Never use a self tailer on an electric winch
• Always tie the halyard off with a man up the rig, never rely on the self tailer or clutch
• When lowering always pay out the rope  hand over hand without too many turns on the winch
• Keep an eye on the winch as well as the person aloft

Chris Evans joins us from Marlow Ropes, Chris is looking forward to adding to his rigging knowledge, working with the team and getting involved with expanding the performance rope side of the business.

Oliver Wyatt joins us from Clipper Ventures, having decided he would like to specialize in rigging for his career in the marine industry, he is keen to learn from our team of experienced riggers. Oliver is a keen racer & will be found competing in the big Solent events this year.

Simon Fairman, a long standing member of the team has also returned to help out on a more regular basis. So as the new boating season gets underway the expanded team at Performance Rigging are ready to help.

We sadly had to say goodbye to Dave Nicholson, who after a few years service is taking a 12 month sabbatical in warmer climes, hopefully to return in time for the build up to the 2012 season. We wish him loads of luck for the year ahead & look forward to his return.
